Deseret News Thursday, November 4, 1965 Page 8B Rifle Mishap Kills Panguitch Hunter Panguitch - An elderly Panguitch man died Wednesday of an accidental gunshot wound received while cleaning his rifle after a hunting trip. Thomas Jefferson Barney, 75, died at 6:30 p.m. in Latter-day Saints Hospital, three hours after the accident. A neighbor, Mrs. Ima Thompson, told police she heard a gunshot and ran to the Barney home where she found Mr. Barney slumped beside his truck and the rifle nearby. Panguitch police said Mr. Barney apparently was cleaning the weapon inside the truck and dropped it as he stepped from the vehicle. He suffered a lower abdominal bullet wound, police said. He was born Nov. 10, 1889 at Brooklyn, Sevier County, to Thomas Jefferson and Olive Higgins Barney. He married Sarah Annie Riggs Aug. 6, 1909. She died March 7, 1917. On July 6, 1919, he married Nellie Ann Barney at Hatch, Garfield County. The marriage was later solemnized in the St. George Temple, Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. She died July 8, 1965. Mr. Barney was a World War I veteran and had been a farmer. Survivors include sons and daughters: Mrs. Jack (Delma) McKean; Mrs. Dean (Sheila) Richmond, Hartley; Mrs. Shirley Webb, Lannon, all of Salt Lake City; Mrs. Blair (Olive) Woodard, Larry, both Panguitch; Ivon, Mrs. Al (Therna) Robinson, Mrs. Lee (Fawn) Averett, Richfield; 46 grandchildren; 10 great-grandchildren; brothers, sisters: Elliot, Panguitch; Angus, Mrs. Bud Harding, both Richfield; Frank, Hatch; Mrs. LaMont Dennison, Gunnison; Mrs. Robert Pulssifer, Nevada. Funeral services will be Saturday at 1 p.m. in Panguitch North Ward chapel. Friends may call at the family home from 10 a.m. to services. Burial will be in Panguitch Cemetery.
