James Daniel "Dan" Owenby, 98, of Seymour, went to be with the Lord peacefully on Wednesday, August 18, 2021, surrounded by his family. He was born on May 7, 1923, to his parents, Isaac Marshall Owenby and Ellen Lawson Owenby. A Seymour native, he attended Harrison-Chilhowee Baptist Academy and Sevier County High School. Dan was working as an aircraft welder in Alliance, Ohio, when he was drafted at the age of 19. Dan served in the Unites States Army's 13th Air Force, 5th Bombardment Group, 394th Bombardment Squadron during World War II. Dan was a pioneer and cut the timber to build their house when he was around the age of 25 after the War. He was a true Renaissance man and used the raw materials from their land to build a beautiful home. Dan was a farmer on Wye Drive and worked in quality control at Robertshaw Controls until his retirement in 1988. He was a long-time member of Knob Creek Baptist Church and First Baptist Church, Seymour. Dan always said, "Step to the beat of your own drummer", and he certainly did. He was preceded in death by his parents; siblings, Roy, Sherrill, Mel, Lucille, Estella, and Gene; and son-in-law, Tim Stinnett. Dan is survived by his wife, Blanche Atchley Owenby; daughters and sons-in-law, Jama (Gary) Ross, Donna Stinnett, Cathy Jerrolds(Dave Hunter), Lisa (George) Bitzas; special niece, Patti (Mike) Howard, and their daughter, Heather Howard; grandchildren, Tracy Ross, Janet Ross, Daniel (Julie) Jerrolds, Dana Jerrolds (Michael) Paramore; several great-grandchildren; sister, Cloella Sisk; special friends, Ben and Cassie Russell, Lynn Reagan, Merwin Borders, Mary and Tony Reagan. Memorial donations may be made to First Baptist Church, Seymour. Family and friends may call at their convenience from 2 to 5 PM Friday, August 20th at Atchley Funeral Home, 122 Peacock Court, Seymour, TN 37865. Due to COVID-19, masks are strongly encouraged to be worn by any attending guests. The Graveside Service will be held at 11 AM Saturday, August 21st in Knob Creek Cemetery with Dr. Bruce Yates officiating. Arrangements are in the care of Atchley Funeral Home, Seymour.
