Bio

YOAKUM: Larry Berckenhoff, passed away Saturday, August 14, 2021. He was born April 22, 1956 in Shiner, the seventh Child of Frank and Pauline (Kurtz) Berckenhoff. He worked and grew up on the family farm in Vlastenc. Larry attended Shiner High School with the class of 1974. At the age of 65 he was called home after a short courageous battle with cancer. Larry worked at Midway Feed Store and Circle Y Saddlery in Sweet Home. He met many lifelong friends at his jobs, was never a stranger to anyone and always had time to "shoot the breeze" with a quick witted joke for everyone. His greatest passion was fishing, in tanks, creeks and the coast, and he had the greatest patience to quietly wait for "the big one". Larry met the love of his life, Betty Squyres in 1989 and they spent their life enjoying fishing and garage sales until her passing in 2014. Due to health problems, Larry had a leg amputated in 2013. He never felt sorry for himself but put his creative skills to work making stepping stones, wind chimes, special handled cans and greatest hobby, making homemade knives. Larry loved animals and never turned away a stray. He cared for them with love and would encourage people to be responsible and neuter their animals. He was a dedicated supporter of Friends of the Gonzales Animal Shelter and Memorials may be sent to 505 St. Francis St, Gonzales Texas 78629 to continue his work. Survivors are his three sisters: Betty Pustka, Erline Kutach (George) and Paula Pekar (Calvin) all of Shiner; best friend and brother by choice, Marlin Pekar (Terri); numerous nieces and nephews. Preceded in death by his parents; his sweetheart, Betty Squyres; sisters, infant Delores Berckenhoff and Patsy Kremling; brothers, Frank Jr. and Ronnie Berckenhofff. Visitation 4:30 to 6:30 p.m., Monday, August 16, 2021 at Thiele Cooper Funeral Home with Rosary recited at 6:30 p.m. Funeral Service 10 a.m., Tuesday, August 17, 2021 at Thiele Cooper Funeral Home with Deacon Joe Machacek officiating.
