Gene was born on November 24, 1924, in Geddes, South Dakota, the thirteenth child of Frank and Rosa (Ambroz) Masur. He was raised on the farm in South Dakota until the family moved to Cole Camp, Missouri. He graduated from Cole Camp High School in 1942. He joined the US Army on June 24, 1943. He served in Northern France, Central Europe, Rhineland and Normandy. Gene was awarded four Bronze Stars in those campaigns. He received his honorable discharge on January 5, 1946. Following his service, Gene moved to Madison, Nebraska, where he worked for his brother, Ambrose, on the farm. He also worked at AM's filling station. On December 27, 1949, Gene married Marceda Labenz at St. Francis Catholic Church in Humphrey. The couple made their home on a farm near Madison. They moved to Madison in 1987. Gene retired from the day to day operations of the farm in 1990. They were members of St. Leonard's Catholic Church in Madison and were former members of the small country church known as St. Francis de Sales (Schoolcraft). Gene served on the District 28 School Board, the Parish Council at Schoolcraft, and as a church trustee. Gene enjoyed his retirement traveling with Marceda, playing cards. He liked to fish with his buddies. Gene enjoyed people and he will be remembered for his loving personality and being a "sweet man". Mr. Masur died Tuesday, November 16, 2015, at Countryside Home in Madison, Nebraska. Gene is survived by his 3 children, Bonnie, Lynelle and Allen; 9 grandchildren and 11 great grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife of 65 years, Marceda; one son, Paul, one grandson, Christopher Stewart; and seven brothers and five sisters. Visitation will be Friday from 5 to 7 p.m. at St. Leonard?s Catholic Church followed by a rosary. Mass of Christian Burial was 10:00 a.m., Saturday, November 21, 2015, at St. Leonard's Catholic Church in Madison. Burial was in the parish cemetery. Resseguie Funeral Home of Madison, Nebraska is in charge of arrangements.
