CARPENTER — Roland Dewayne Wicks, 77, Carpenter, died Wednesday, Nov. 14, 2007, in a medical center at Huron. Funeral services will be Sunday in the Carpenter Methodist Church. Burial will be in the Richland Cemetery. Honorary pallbearers will be the Carpenter Cafe morning coffee crew. Active pallbearers will be his grandchildren. Arne Funeral Home in Clark is in charge of arrangements. He was born Jan. 18, 1930, on a farmstead near Carpenter to Harvey and Goldie (Board) Wicks. He attended Bunker Hill School and finished his secondary education at Wicks School and in the U.S. Air Force, where he served from 1951 to 1955. He was stationed in South Carolina, Texas and France. He then attended a semester at University of S.D. as an art major. He married Kathryn Olson Sept. 13, 1950, at Clark. After he left the U.S. Air Force, they made their home at the family farm five miles northeast of Carpenter, where he resided until his death. He was an artist by avocation but in 1965, he was appointed postmaster of Carpenter, where he worked until 1992. He also farmed and raised cattle. He was a member of the Carpenter Methodist Church, a member of the Democratic Party, a weather spotter for the National Weather Service and treasurer of Thompson-Madson American Legion Post 153 in Carpenter, where he was a member for 43 years. Survivors include his wife of 57 years, Kathryn; five children, Kerry (Lynn) Wicks of Jamestown, N.D., Vicky Wicks of Rapid City, Wade (Brenda) Wicks and Scott (Sharon) Wicks of Carpenter and Yvonne (Tip) Taylor of Presho; three brothers, Milo (Lois) Wicks of Portland, Ore., Gordon (Betty) Wicks of Rapid City and Larry (Jan) Wicks of Cavour; two sisters, Phyllis (Ray) Lathrop of Vancouver, Wash., and Ione (Royal) Gamber of Dallas, Texas; one sister-in-law, Naomi Wicks of Mobridge; 13 grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.
