She was the fourth of five Children born to Thomas and Bessie Lee Weaks Trammell. While in grade school, Emma's family moved to a farm in Bowie County, West Texas near Lubbock where her dad drove a truck. While in college, she attended the Baptist Church and at a social met her future husband, Paul L. Rettman. They were married in August, 1961. After graduation Emma taught third grade in Plainview. In 1963 she and Paul became the proud parents of Nancy Jean. Emma happily stayed home to raise their daughter and support Paul in his career. The family moved to San Antonio in the mid-1960's when Paul's employer, The US Geological Survey transferred him. Emma and Paul enjoyed traveling throughout the United States, especially Western States and Alaska. Sunday afternoon outings were favorite activities of the family, which lasted throughout their married life for 53 years.
