Reg Westmoreland, 94, passed away at his home Saturday, May 15, 2021. He was born to Mark and Grace (Knight) Westmoreland on October 31, 1926 in Navarro, Texas. Reg graduated from Mildred High School. He received his BA & MA from the University of North Texas and his PhD from the University of Missouri. On February 6, 1949, he married Mary Burns in Dallas, Texas. They had three children together, Linda, Lisa, and David. Reg was a member of Denton Bible Church. Reg's career included being a reporter/editor for the Dallas Times Herald (1947-1955), teacher of Journalism at Abilene Christian University (1955-1964), teacher of Journalism at the University of North Texas (1964-1994), with a two-year leave of absence when he was Associate Dean at Pepperdine University (1983-1985). He chaired the Journalism Department at UNT from 1974-1988. He was a Southern Fund Fellow, 1959-1961, Texas Journalism Education Council (President 1976-1977), American Society Journalism School Administrators (President, 1978-1979), Association Education Journalism & Mass Communications, Member American Association Schools & Departments Journalism (President 1980-1981), President of the Association Schools of Journalism & Mass Communication, 1981-1982. Reg was an avid gardener. He never met a stranger and was generous to all, especially his family. He was well-read and we called him "the man with the facts." He was proud of his children and grandchildren and always involved in their lives, seeking to support and encourage them. His humor and fun personality will be sorely missed by all. Reg was preceded in death by his parents, Mark Westmoreland & Grace Denton, his wife, Mary, and his son, David C. Westmoreland. Left to cherish his memory are his daughters, Linda Storm of Ontario, California and Lisa Burlingame of Wheaton, Illinois, as well as nine grandchildren and six great-grandchildren. A Celebration of Life will be held at a later date.
