Joel David Fendley was drafted into military service. Following Basic and Advanced training, he received orders to Vietnam, arriving in-country on 15 May 1967. He was then assigned to A Company, 2nd Battalion, 8th Cavalry, a component of the 1st Cavalry Division. On 09 Aug 1967, Alpha 2/8 Cav conducted a helicopter assault into what became Landing Zone PAT, located in the Song Re River valley about 40 kilometers southwest of Quang Ngai City. The assault was hotly contested, and 11 US soldiers were killed in the action. Then-PFC Fendley was one of the 11 dead. His body was returned to his family, who buried him in the family plot in Morton Cemetery. In later years, his mother, father, and a sister joined him there.
