William Russell Carpenter (Bill), of Baytown, Texas, passed away on Wednesday, April 28, 2021. He was born in Pittsburg, Texas on Christmas Eve, December 24, 1937. Bill was the only child of Lloyd and Eunice Carpenter. His family moved from Pittsburg to Crosby, Texas in 1957. He reported for service in the U.S. Army in October of 1960. Most of his military time was served at Fort McClelland, Alabama, where he became an Instructor at the Nuclear, Biological, and Chemical (NBC) Warfare School. SGT Carpenter split his time between military duties and stock car racing on the weekends. After his Army service, Bill returned to Crosby, where he met and married the love of his life, Elizabeth Martin. For the next 56 years, they made their home in Baytown, Texas. Bill worked at the Dupont La Porte plant for 33 years before retiring as a Mechanical Supervisor in 1997. He continued his service to the industry and the community as a Safety Instructor at the Houston Area Safety Council. Bill is preceded in death by his parents. He is survived by his wife, Elizabeth, his daughter, Lisa Carpenter Wheeler; his Son-in-Law, Clay Wheeler; and his Grandson, Jack Wheeler; all of Baytown. Those who knew him will miss his great humor, storytelling, friendship, and his barbecue. Honoring the family as Pallbearers are: Raymond Martin of Mont Belvieu, Philip Plocheck of Crosby, Eddie Marshall of Highlands, Charlie Wilson of Pittsburg, Roy Selensky of Highlands, and Charles Cooper of Houston. Arrangements are under the direction of Navarre Funeral Home. The family will receive friends at Navarre from 5-7pm on Tuesday, May 4. A Funeral Service will be held in the Navarre Chapel on Wednesday, May 5, at 10am. Graveside service will immediately follow at Sterling White Cemetery in Highlands.
