Bio

Confederate States Army - PVT CO G, 56 ALA CAV Brother to William Marion Cottrell Obituary of J.A. Cottrell (as written)- Brother Cottrell was born in Smith County, TN in 1816 and died in Comanche County, Texas, the 7th day of July, 1893, at the age 76 years, 9 months and 10 days. He volunteered in New Orleans in the spring of 1845 and was in Gen Scott's staff during the Mexican War and until honorably discharged. He married Mrs. Sarah Forehand in 1851 and settled in Baldwin county, Ala. embraced Religion and joined the M.E. church South in 1853, and has been a faithful worker in the cause. He served through the confederate war with distinction and moved to Texas in 1870, where he remained until his death. Brother Cottrell sleeps in Zion Hill Church cemetery at which place his friends, relatives and classmates of Salem church paid him their last respects. His funeral was preached by writer, pastor of that church. Brother Cottrell leaves an aged wife, three sons, and a host of friends to mourn his loss, but bless the Lord, their loss was his eternal gain. He was loved by all who knew him, for to know (can't read). We desire to express our thanks to the good people of this county for their kindness to our father and mother during their afflictions and our father's death. Oh, justice and mercy guide our friends in this life, protect and comfort them in death, and give them a fond remembrance after they have passed to the world beyond. Our victories in this life are not ours alone, but will be enjoyed by those that take our places after we are gone and the more we help others bear their burdens, the lighter ours will be. God Bless our friends. J.W., A.J. and J.B. Cottrell
