Mary Ann Pavlis was born September 25, 1925 at Spencer, Nebraska to Frank and Mary (Boska) Prokop. She was the youngest of 10 children all of whom developed a strong work ethic from life on the farm, chores, and a mile walk to the one room schoolhouse. After graduation in 1942, she moved to Omaha and was a secretary for the University of Omaha. Mary Ann and Joe Pavlis were married at Kountze Memorial Lutheran Church on October 25, 1952. To this union 3 children were born; Beverly, Steven and Richard. Childhood days on the farm prepared her well for homemaking. Her garden supplied their basement fruit room and her kitchen was filled with the aromas of Kolaches, rye bread and pork roast and dumplings---all made from scratch. Tasks like churning ice cream, grinding poppy seed and casing jiternice were "family time". Mary Ann was a dedicated volunteer at church, school and Sokol South Omaha. She was a proud member of Ty Krasne Cesky Pisnicky Singers. She was fluent in the Czech language and corresponded frequently with family in the Czech Republic, traveling there twice. Polka music always played in the background of their home and every Saturday night, the entire family went to a dance at Sokol Auditorium. Mary Ann had a competitive zest for Scrabble, Chinese Checkers and daily completion of the Omaha World Herald crossword puzzle and Jumble, often staying awake until the wee hours to finish them. She loved visiting with family and friends while on her front porch glider. Mary Ann was part of "The Greatest Generation" to whom we salute and owe our gratitude. They shaped our world with their resiliency and devotion, having lived through the Dust Bowl Depression, World War II and 911. She had an unbelievable inner strength, faith and love for the USA and her Czech heritage. At age 85 she endured the rigors of cancer. Then came the challenges of 2 strokes. Never complaining, she maintained her sunny disposition...an inspiration to all. On her 94th birthday, she was asked for her secret to a long, happy life. With a smile she answered, "Look up and work hard". Good advice, indeed, to look up to God.
