UPDATED: 07 Nov 2016 The details below are from correspondence letters written in February 1905 when Zettie died. MITTIE (LEWIS) COLE'S ACCOUNT (02/21/1905) "Zettie Wellington got burnt Saturday morning to death. She blown the lamp out and it exploded and set her afire and burnt all her clothes off except her shoes and garters and burnt her hair off. She never died till Saturday night. It was sure bad." LEAH LEWIS' ACCOUNT (02/27/1905) "Well, did you hear about Zettie Johnson getting burned to death last Saturday...was a week ago. She went to blow out one of those big kind of lamps, and it exploded on and threw oil on her." "Her clothes caught in a flame. She threw a quilt around her to smother the fire, and it having oil on it, it caught, and when it did, she broke to a hole of water nearby. But as she was suffering so, when she got there, she did go on and not stop." "She ran 3/4 of a mile before she was caught, and when overtaken, everything was burned off her except her shoes and garters. Even her hair was all burned off. She lived to tell them how it happened and what she did."
"Eternal rest grant to her, O Lord. And let perpetual light shine on her."
