Bio

Obituary (from the Laird Funeral Home website): Graveside service for James Douglas Bell, Sr, 87, of McKinney will be held at 10:30am on Tuesday, September 8, 2020 at Ridgeview Memorial Park in Allen, Texas. Mr. Bell passed away on Wednesday, September 2, 2020 in McKinney. Doug was born in Anna, Texas on September 26, 1932, the son of Lewis Browder and Nannie Jane Stroud Bell. His parents raised him to be a gentleman and always treat people with respect. Doug joined the US Navy to serve his country. When he returned to civilian life, he met a young lady at the roller rink one evening. He and Peggy knew immediately that they were meant for each other. It took less than 2 months for them to make the decision to spend the rest of their lives together and they were married on July 11, 1952 in Liberal, Kansas. The next 68 years were filled with hard work and dedication to his family. Doug worked many jobs and found joy in each of them. He was a barber, truck driver, policeman, courier, and construction worker. Although Doug spent most of his life working and providing for his family, he loved his boys very much. They made great memories camping and on their beach trips. He was proud of the lives his boys made for themselves and he watched with joy as they added grandchildren to his list of most important things. He loved hearing them run in calling him "Comp" or "Grandpa" and the hugs he got from them made his day each time he saw them. Doug loved his Lord and Savior and he and Peggy made sure their lives were great examples to their family. They put Christ first in their lives and when they moved to McKinney in 1980, they became members of Waddill Street Baptist Church and when they could no longer attend in person, they would spend their Sunday mornings hearing sermons from not just one church, but several. His "can-do" attitude and exemplary work ethic, along with his smile and joy that he shared with everyone will be missed and his sons and their families will carry on his legacy of love, kindness and importance of family in his honor. Doug is survived by his best friend and wife, Peggy Jo Forbes Bell of McKinney; sons, Doug Bell, Jr and his wife, Sherri of Newcastle, Texas, Randy Bell and wife, Theresa of Miller Grove, Texas, Dennis Bell and wife, Debbie of Canyon, Texas, and Danny Bell and wife, Mary of Sayre, Oklahoma; and daughter-in-law, Kandi Bell of Wayside, Texas; 15 grandchildren and 27 great-grandchildren. He is preceded in death by his son, Wade Bell; and parents, Lewis and Nannie Bell. Pallbearers will be his grandsons, Guy Bell, Matt Bell, Landon Bell, Dalton Bell, Curtis Bell, Toby Bell, J.T. Bell and Travis Bell. In lieu of flowers, the family asks that donations be made to Waddill Street Baptist Church Youth Department at 1401 North Waddill Street, McKinney, Texas 75069.
