Shirley Volf passed to eternal life on January 24, 2021, at home in Hickman, Nebraska. She was eighty-five years old. Shirley was born to the late Ronald A.H. and Iva D. Mitton on September 7, 1935, in Detroit, Michigan. Raised in Romulus, Michigan, she attended the Romulus public schools and was graduated as Salutatorian of Romulus High School’s 1953 senior class. A week before her eighteenth birthday, Shirley began her college degree at Western Michigan College in Kalamazoo. There, she earned a Bachelor of Arts from the College of Education in 1957. She also completed graduate classes at the University of Michigan, Ann Arbor, and the University of Colorado, Boulder. As Shirley taught third and fourth grades in Mount Clemons, Michigan, she met Marvin “Joe” Volf at Selfridge Air National Guard Base in Mount Clemons, Michigan. They married there in 1961 and relocated to Nebraska shortly after Joe finished his military service. Shirley continued teaching in Kearney, Nebraska, until the birth of her first child, at which time she devoted herself to raising her daughter and future children. Joe and Shirley spent thirty-seven years together until Joe’s death in 1998. Shirley loved following and cheering for the various University of Michigan athletic teams (especially football), the Detroit Redwings, the Detroit Tigers, and the University of Nebraska Cornhuskers. In 2005, she enjoyed travelling to Pasadena, California, to experience the beauty and fragrance of the Rose Parade and to watch her Wolverines play in the Rose Bowl. Shirley was an accomplished knitter and took great pleasure in quilting, sewing, gardening, and oil painting. She treasured the company of family cats over the decades. Shirley is survived by her children Valerie (James) Wahlstrom, of Carbondale, Colorado, Andrea Volf, of Hickman, Nebraska, Dr. Stephanie Volf, of Mobile, Alabama, and William Volf, of Albuquerque, New Mexico; her grandchildren Kenneth (Amanda Drontle) Wahlstrom, Adrienne Wahlstrom, John Volf, Iva Volf, and Nathaniel Volf; and her sister Eunice Kause, of Belleville, Michigan. She is preceded in death by her husband Marvin Volf; her parents Ronald and Iva Mitton; her siblings Bruce Mitton, Gertrude Minthorn, Lawrence Mitton, and Gordon Mitton; and her mother- and father-in-law John and Matilda Volf. A private burial will occur at Lincoln Memorial Park.
