Bio

Anne Gillespie of Burkburnett went to be with the Lord on Tuesday, December 22. She was 76 years old. Born in Dallas on April 28, 1944, to Harold and Lois Voss, she was an only child. Anne grew up in Fort Worth and graduated from Arlington Heights High School in 1962. She graduated from the University of North Texas in 1966 with both a Bachelor and Master’s Degree in Education with an emphasis in Journalism. She was a member of Alpha Delta Pi sorority. She had a deep and abiding faith in Christ. She began her teaching career at Bryan Adams High School in Dallas. She married Joe Gillespie on December 30, 1971, and moved to Burkburnett. Anne and Joe had two children, John and Julie. In 1985, Anne and Joe went to a Sunday school retreat at Glorietta Baptist Assembly. There, Anne felt the Lord calling her to work with teens. Immediately following that retreat, the Superintendent for Burkburnett called and asked her to teach journalism. Anne viewed her teaching as a calling, investing in the lives of many students and telling them about Jesus. She taught at Burkburnett High School for 22 years, retiring in 2007. Under her guidance, her students won many state and national journalism awards. One student Anne impacted in Dallas was Bob Phillips, the Texas Country Reporter. Bob featured Anne as the teacher who had inspired his career in journalism on his show in 2016. Anne was an active member of First Baptist Church of Wichita Falls. She volunteered teaching Vacation Bible School and Bible Drill. Anne was preceded in death by her parents Harold Voss and Lois and OJ Baker and her husband Joe. Left to honor Anne and remember her love are her son John Gillespie of Wichita Falls; daughter Julie and son-in-law Bill Lourcey and grandsons Will and Rob of Fort Worth, Texas; and her first cousin Betty and her husband Charles Husbands of Sulphur Springs, Texas. Due to Covid, there will be a private family graveside service. In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations to the Burkburnett Senior Citizen’s Center.
