Note: It is generally regarded that John was born in Garrett, Ellis Co., which is the place of birth provided by his widow, Ruth, on his death certificate. John, himself, gives nearby Palmer, Ellis Co., as his birthplace on his U.S. WWI Draft Registration Card. Death Certificate: John Rife, age 58, died 18 Aug 1952, 12:45 p.m., Ennis Municipal Hospital, of cardiac standstill (seconds) due to acute coronary occlusion (28 hours). Occupation: Taxicab operator. Son of Leonard and Sally (Guthrie) Rife. Informant: Mrs John [Ruth] Rife. Burial: Myrtle Cemetery.
