Jacob C. "Jake" Schlagel Susanna Schlagel WEISER — Jacob C. "Jake" Schlagel, 83, and Susanna Schlagel, 85, of Weiser, both died Wednesday, Nov. 22, 1989, in Weiser of natural causes. Funeral services for Mr. and Mrs. Schlagel will be held at 2 p.m. Monday, Nov. 27, at Thomason Funeral Chapel, Weiser. Burial will follow in Hillcrest Cemetery, Weiser. Mr. Schlagel was born Dec. 19, 1905, at Longmont, Colo., a son of Conrad and Sophia Rudy Schlagel. He grew up on the family farm in Longmont. Mrs. Schlagel was born Feb. 15, 1904, at Babotehna, Russia, a daughter of John P. and Mary Elizabeth Rudy Schlagel. She immigrated with her family to the United States in 1911, moving to Montana with her family where they lived for a few years. In the fall of 1913, they moved to Longmont, Colo., where she met Jake Schlagel whom she married May 9, 1926. In February of 1927, the couple moved to Sheboygan, Wis., and he worked at the Dillingham Refrigeration Manufacturing Co. Moving from Wisconsin back to Longmont, he worked at farming and in the coal mines. In March of 1928, they moved to Torrington, Wyo., where he rented and worked a 160-acre farm. In February of 1935, the couple moved to Payette, Idaho, where he worked in the orchards, hay fields, and at other jobs that were available to him at the time. In the spring of 1936, the couple bought a 40-acre farm on the Oregon Side near Weiser where they resided until retirement on Oct. 22, 1974, moving into the city of Weiser. Mrs. Schlagel became a naturalized U.S. citizen on Aug. 28, 1941. Mr. Schlagel was president of the Malheur District Improvement Co. from 1964 to 1975, and during his term, was instrumental in the construction of the concrete ditch on the Oregon Side. The Schlagels' survivors include three daughters, Leona Thompson of Boise, Elenora Web- ster of Ontario, Ore., and Betty Leach of Carlin, Nev.; two sons, Clarence and Roy Schlagel, both of Boise; 16 grandchildren; 12 great-grandchildren; and numerous nieces and nephews. Mrs. Schlagel is also survived by two brothers, Phillip Schlagel in Montana and Martin Schlagel in Arizona; and three half sisters. The Schlagels were preceded in death by three grandchildren. The family suggests that memorials may be made in their names to Friends of Memorial Hospital, 645 E. 5th, Weiser 83672.
