Obit-Gonzales Inquirer Sep. 17, 1902 Mr. John Askey Died-At his home about four miles easrt of Gonzales, Texas, on Tuesday, September 16, 1902, at 10 o'clock p.m., John L. Askey, aged 43 years, 1 month and 9 days. The remains will be interred in the family cemetery at the Wilson church at 5 o'clock this evening. Mr. Askey was a son of Governor H. Askey, an old citizen of this section and who was widley known during the early history of Gonzales. The old family home and birth-place stands within sight where the son breathed his last. The deceased was a good man and citizen without ostentation. He was companionable and friendly to all whom he knew and his home open for hospitality and kindness. He was popular and highly esteemed by all who knew him and his friends are numbered from one end of the county to the other. During the past two primary elections he was a candidate for tax assessor of this county and though defeated for the nomination aproved the high esteem in which he was held by the people of this county. He had been sick for several weeks and for several days reported at deaths door. He leaves a wife and two sons who are grown. Mr. Askey was a member of the order of Woodmen, which order will doubtless officiate at the funeral this evening. A host of friends all over the county will sympathize with the bereaved family in their sorrow. Obit-Gonzales Inquirer Sep. 18, 1902 Laid at Rest The remains of Mr. John L. Askey were laid at rest yesterday evening in the family cemetery at Wilson church, near his home. There was quite a gathering at the funeral, estimated at three or four hundred people. Rev. Thomas Gregory conducted the religious services at the house, after which the Guadalupe camp of Woodmen took charge of the remains and interred the body according to the ceremonies of that order. There were about 60 Woodmen present. Mr. Askey was a member of the Guadalupe camp.
