Lincoln Journal Star (NE) - Wednesday, January 21, 2004 Lavina M. Dvorak, 92, Lincoln, died Thursday (1/15/04). Lavina was born to Mabel and Joseph Meiners at their homestead in the South Dakota Badlands near Wall, S.D. on April 23, 1911. Her childhood years were spent at the Rocking RBar Ranch near Wasta, S.D.; she attended rural school near Wasta and in 1928 graduated cum laude from Coolidge High School, Rapid City, S.D. She then graduated from Spearfish Normal School and received a Bachelor of Science from University of South Dakota in 1932 and a master's in education degree from University of Nebraska at Lincoln. Lavina taught in South Dakota, Iowa, Missouri and Nebraska, retiring after teaching mathematics and drivers education training for 39 years at Irving Middle School and Lincoln High School. She was the first female drivers education instructor for Lincoln High School and also adult driver education classes. After her retirement, she owned and managed rental property in Lincoln and South Dakota. Lavina was active in the work of the Eastern Star and served in many officer positions in OES 148, including office of worthy matron. She was past worthy president of Beauceant; past president of Alpha Delta Kappa, and also past president of Lincoln Woman's Club. She was active in Kappa Phi, served as vice president of Lincoln Area Retired Teachers Association and was an active member of Saint Paul United Methodist Church in Lincoln. She belonged to bridge group No. 1 of the teacher's association and enjoyed playing card games, reading and traveling. She traveled often with her brother Joseph Henry "Bud" Meiners Jr. and his family throughout the United States. Survivors: son, daughter-in-law, Ron and Bonnie Dvorak, Long Beach, Calif.; sister, Maude Soderquist, Wasta, S.D.; granddaughter-in-law, Josephine Dvorak; great-grandchildren, Nathalie Dvorak, Nicole Dvorak, Martine Dvorak, all of Scotland, UK; many nieces and nephews and numerous great-nieces and great-nephews. Preceded in death by husband, Edward; parents; brothers, Russell, Kenneth and Joseph "Bud" Meiners; sister-in-law, Thalice Meiners; grandson, Ronnie Dvorak; niece, Lesl Lines; nephew, Steve Meiners.
