AUGUSTA, Ga. - Mrs. Jane C. Laney, wife of Levings W. Laney, 91, died Wednesday, January 7, 2009 at her home. Mrs. Laney, a native of Mobile, AL had lived in Augusta for the past 56 years. She had been active in the civic, religious and social life of Augusta. Mrs. Laney had served on committees of the United Way, as well as a number of other organizations affiliated with United Way, and is a past Director for the Augusta Chapter of the American Red Cross. She is a past President of the Women's Board of University Hospital, past President of Boxwood Garden Club and served on several committees of the Augusta Council of Garden Clubs. Mrs. Laney was a former member of the Augusta Chapter P of PEO. As a faithful member of St. John United Methodist Church, she has held many responsibilities, including member of the Administrative Board and many committees of that Board, Youth Council for Older Youth, and Superintendent of the Junior Division of the Sunday School. She was also past President and other offices of the Women's Society of Christian Services. For many years Mrs. Laney served as the Nursery Superintendent of the Sunday School. For her dedication to her church, Mrs. Laney is listed in the Second Edition of "Who's Who in the Methodist Church". In addition to her husband she is survived by two daughters: Mrs. J. Thomas (Frances) Altizer, Mrs. Charles C. (Joan) Piercy; grandchildren: J. Michael Altizer (Nan), Karen Altizer Johnson (Collier), D. Rodney Kight, Jr., K. Ryan Kight (Ashley) and 6 great-grandchildren. Mrs. Laney was preceded in death by her parents, three brothers, two sisters and a grandchild: David Altizer. Funeral services will be held at 3:00 P.M. on Friday, January 9, 2009 at St. John United Methodist Church, Augusta, with Rev. Gary DeMore officiating assisted by the Rev. Bill Edwards of Canton, GA. Pallbearers will be Nelson Hamilton, Lansing Lee, Jr., Lansing Lee III, Mark Maund, Tim Maund, Robert Pruett, Charles Stewart and Michael Hodges.
