On Wednesday, September 9, 2020, Ernest B Nelson (Ernie), passed away peacefully after struggling with various health issues at the age of 80. Ernie was born on February 8, 1940 in the China Grove Community north of Wolfe City, TX to Gilbert and Minnie Boyd Nelson. He graduated High School from Wolfe City High School in Wolfe City, TX and received his B.S. Degree in Music from East Texas State University in Commerce, TX (now Texas A&M, Commerce). He went on to attend Southwestern Baptist Theological Seminary in Fort Worth, TX. He married Shirley Dean Jones in 1961, and raised four children – Vance, Jared, Crystal and Susan. Shirley passed away in 2009 after 48 years of marriage. Ernie eventually met and married Lynne Marie Norman on September 11, 2010, and enjoyed his remaining 10 years with her in Longview, TX. Ernie was a man of deep faith and was ordained to the ministry in 1975. He served in the ministry 42 years at several churches in Texas in positions as Minister of Religious Education, Minister of Music, Minister of Youth, and Church Administrator. After retiring, he remained actively involved at Mobberly Baptist Church in Longview. He had an incredible singing voice and traveled as part of the Singing Men of East Texas for many years. He was an active part of the Longview Bonsai Society, and his love and talent of growing Bonsai trees was only outdone by his passion and calling to share the love and Good News of Christ. He always had a heart for helping others, and always had wisdom and encouragement to share with those around him. To help share his early experiences with others, he wrote the book “Writings from Black Cat Thicket”, a collection of stories during his early childhood in Black Cat Thicket. Ernie was preceded in death by his parents, Gilbert and Minnie Boyd, as well as his first wife, Shirley. He is survived by his wife, Lynne, his children, Vance and wife Maria, Jared, Crystal and husband Troy, Susan and husband Kenny, his stepdaughter Helen, his brother Gordon and wife Lora Lea, his sister Carol and husband Tom, as well as 15 grandchildren, 6 great grandchildren, and several nieces, and nephews. To continue to help others, Ernie decided to donate his body to UT Southwestern through the Willed Body Program. Due to COVID-19, there will be a small Celebration of Ernie’s Life for close family only. In lieu of flowers or donations, please donate to your local homeless shelter in Ernie’s name.
