The San Diego Union-Tribune, CA, Wednesday, February 16, 2005, pg. 6, col. 3 Richard Brown Coyle, a prominent Los Angeles trial lawyer for almost 50 years, died February 11, 2005 at Sharp Coronado Hospital. He was born on February 19, 1919, he passed shortly before his 86th birthday. Mr. Coyle was raised in Chicago and attended Northwestern University on a tennis scholarship. While in college, he studied acting, eventually attracting the attention of famous comic actor Edward Everett Horton, and at Horton's urging he moved to Los Angeles to pursue an acting career. His thespian ambitions were cut short by the outbreak of World War II and he joined his brother, Jay, in enlisting in the Navy. Mr. Coyle served with distinction on the Robert I. Paine in the North Atlantic, as a First Lieutenant. His ship provided cover for the allied troops on D-Day. After the war, he returned to Illinois and obtained his law degree from Northwestern Law School. Infatuated with California and the beautiful people he had met in his acting days, he returned to California and became a member of the California State Board in 1949. In the late 1960s, Mr. Coyle founded his own law firm which eventually became Coyle, Marrone & Robinson. He was a lawyer's lawyer, bringing his considerable acting skills to the courtroom. Mr. Coyle was often called the 'Silver Fox' or the 'Cary Grant' of the Hollywood Bar and he once won 12 consecutive jury trials. After retiring, he moved to Coronado Cays, reluctantly. He soon came to love it and was known around town for his white hair and dressed with a colorful tie and jacket, forever a lawyer. In addition to tennis and golf, his passions included travel. He enjoyed African safaris, London's Royal Ascot, his numerous cruises, and memberships in the La Jolla Country Club, San Diego Country Club, Wilshire Country Club, and Coronado Cays Yacht Club. Mr. Coyle is survived by his loving wife of 18 years, Willene Whiteman Coyle of Coronado, California, his niece Deber Coyle Cassen of Dallas, Texas, and his nephew, Richard Jay Coyle of Franklin Lakes, New Jersey. A Funeral service will be held at Forest Lawn-Hollywood Hills located at 6300 Forest Lawn Drive on Friday, February 18, 2005 at 11 a.m. at the "Church of the Hills". A reception will be held immediately after the funeral service. There will be a celebration of his life at the Coronado Cays Yacht Club, Feb. 27, 2005 at 3 p.m. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Sharp Coronado Hospital, 250 Prospect Place, Coronado, California 92118 or to FOCUS.
