Grace Lucille Momand Gates was born on June 15, 1894, in Manhattan, New York. Over the course of her life she was connected through marriage to several of New York's most prominent families, and she became a well-known figure in the society of her day. In 1919 she married financier and photographer James Lawrence Breese, remembered as a Wall Street broker, pioneer of amateur color photography, and the owner of "The Orchard," his grand Stanford White–designed estate in Southampton. Their marriage brought Grace into the heart of Long Island's Gilded Age colony, but the union ended in divorce before Breese's death in 1934. Her second marriage took place in 1927 to Harry Payne Bingham, a wealthy financier, philanthropist, and sportsman, descended from the notable Bingham family of Connecticut. He was widely recognized as an art collector and supporter of scientific exploration, particularly oceanographic research. Grace and Bingham eventually divorced, and she moved on to a new chapter in her life. In 1938 she married Geoffrey McNair Gates, who became her third husband. This marriage marked her later years, as she remained active in New York and Long Island society. Grace was remembered for her poise, elegance, and ability to adapt across different worlds. Through her marriages she was linked to a wide range of cultural, financial, and philanthropic endeavors, and she moved comfortably within the social worlds of Manhattan and Southampton. She died in Manhattan on September 11, 1946, at the age of fifty-two. She was buried at Woodlawn Cemetery in the Bronx, New York
