Florene Holscher Norman, 81, of Fort Worth, passed away Thursday, Aug. 30, 2007. Mass of Christian Burial will be at 10 a.m., Saturday, at St. Paul the Apostle Catholic Church, 5508 Black Oak Lane, Fort Worth, with the Rev. Ellsworth T. Wigginton celebrant. An interment will be at 4 p.m., Saturday, in Sacred Heart Cemetery in Lott, Texas, under the direction of Calvario Funeral Chapel. Florene was born in Travis, Texas, to the late Michael and Rosa Holscher, the youngest of four daughters. Her father was a cotton ginner and Florene helped with bookkeeping and other aspects of running the family business. During World War II, she served as a census taker for Falls County. She cherished her heritage as a sixth-generation German-American, attending family reunions throughout Texas, with billing as "the second-largest recorded family in Texas." On New Year's Eve, Dec. 31, 1946, she married Benjamin Norman. Being a military wife, she lived in various locations throughout the United States and in Newfoundland, Canada, eventually settling in Fort Worth, where she lived out her years of retirement. Florene loved to cook and try new recipes, was an avid craftswoman and seamstress, quilting, and crocheting even during times of illness in her last months. She was a longtime member of St. Paul's Altar Society in which she served on many committees and held various offices. Florene never tired of helping others. In addition to having her own six children, she opened her home to several generations of family members and friends for extended periods to help them during times of illness or transition. There was always room for another chair and plate at her table. Florene had a great talent in her ability to grow beautiful plants and flowers. She delighted in encouraging nature's creatures to visit her patio by putting out birdseed and other forms of enticement so she could sit and watch them from her sewing room window; whether lizards or squirrels, hummingbirds or cardinals, she took time to note what they were doing and passed along the tales to all the family members. She loved country-western music, singing along with the radio or her collection of records. As a favorite pastime she enjoyed watching the Texas Rangers baseball games on television and would stay up into the wee hours just to watch them win. Florene served in many capacities as room mother for PTO, den mother for Cub/Boy Scouts, adult sponsor for CYO, and any other project when "the kids" asked her to help. She is survived by her loving husband of 60 years, Benjamin Norman, of Fort Worth; daughters, Patricia Chung and husband, Lloyd, Parice Aziere and husband, Tim, and Rose Young, all of Fort Worth; sons, Malcolm Norman and wife, Janet, of Alvardo, Weldon Norman and wife, Bernadette, of Bedford, and Steve Norman, of Fort Worth; numerous grandchildren and great-grandchildren; and many extended family members and friends.
