James Emil Farek, age 84, of Flatonia, Texas passed away on Wednesday June 10, 2020. James was born November 28, 1935 in Pine Springs, Texas to Lillian Kalmus Farek and Emil Farek. James is survived by his wife, Pauline Farek; son Kirby Farek (Nancy) of Flatonia, Texas; son Mace Farek of Katy, Texas; son Mark Farek of Houston, Texas; and daughter Joan Biel of Flatonia, Texas; sister Mollie Beck (Ron) of Flatonia, Texas. James was preceded in death by; son Nicholas Farek and son-in-law Bernie Biel; father Emil Farek and mother Lillian Kalmus Farek; brother Leroy Farek; brother Franklin Farek and sister Lillian Wotipka; grandson Courtlen Farek. A visitation for James will be held Friday, June 12, 2020 from 5:00 PM to 7:00 PM at Smith Funeral Home, Flatonia, Texas. A rosary will occur Friday, June 12, 2020 at 7:00 PM, Flatonia, TX. A funeral mass will occur Saturday, June 13, 2020 at 10:00 AM at Sacred Heart Catholic Church, Flatonia, TX. A burial will occur Saturday, June 13, 2020 at Sacred Heart Catholic Cemetery, Flatonia, TX. Serving as pallbearers are David Florus, Brent Florus, Ron Beck Jr., Virgil Guetieriz, Alex Holden Farek and Nancen Kainer. Honorary pallbearers are his Grandchildren, Great Grandchildren and Brandon Hernandez. James was born to Emil and Lillian (Kalmus) Farek on Nov. 26, 1935 in Pine Springs. James left us after heart surgery complications but mainly from the stress and isolation from family and friends due to the current COVID situation. James is survived by his beautiful wife Pauline (Florus) who he married on Aug. 26, 1956 at Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Flatonia. James began his career with the Jarbet Company which did major highway construction. During his career with the Jarbet Company, James was part of building the Texas World Speedway in College Station, the Somerville Lake Dam and military bases in San Antonio and Killeen. James was adamant in hiring local Flatonia boys to work these projects while they made their way through college. James would bring these boys to his home so Pauline could provide a home-cooked meal for them. After leaving the Jarbet Company, James and Pauline built their own successful paving business. Besides being successful with the paving business, James also made his way in music. He was part of The Shuck Brothers and then eventually James and his brother-in-law Donnie Florus, co-founded The Velvets. The Velvets entertained locally and across the state. Besides James, his brother-in-laws, Donnie and Tony Florus, friends David Simper, Abel Rodriguez and Joe Woods had the distinction of performing with Willie Nelson, Bob Wills, Tony Booth and many other Nashville recording artists. Not only did they perform with these artists, they also had the honor of playing for many weddings, picnics and festivals. To this day, the children, the grandchildren and the great-grandchildren of the parents who danced to The Velvets are still avid fans. James, Pauline and many other Flatonia citizens were instrumental in creating the celebration of the Flatonia Centennial in 1973 and the Czhilispiel Polka and Czhilispiel. Dreaming songs which were written by George Gannon and are still played at Czhilispiel. James and Pauline were blessed with five children, Mark, Nicholas, Kirby (Nancy), Joan and Mace. Additional blessings include six grandchildren, Courtlen, Jenna, Teagan, Holden, Nancen and Brandon. These blessings brought eight great-grandchildren which includes Addison, Jayce, Kynlee, Kayden, Adley, Emilia James, Finley and Logan Nicholas. James is also survived by his sister, Mollie (Ronnie) Beck, sister-in-law, Gladys Holub, many nieces, nephews, great nieces and nephews, and great great nieces and nephews. James is preceded in death by his parents; son, Nicholas; grandson, Courtlen; son-in-law, Bernie Biel; sister, Lillian (Walter) Wotipka; brothers, Lee Roy (Betty), and Franklin; brotherin-law, Ben Florus (Annie Jo Reitz); sister-in-law, Julie (Kubicek) Florus; brother-in-law and band member, Tony Florus. He was laid to rest at the Sacred Heart Cemetery in Flatonia with Pall Bearers David Florus (nephew), Brent Florus (nephew), Ron Beck, Jr. (nephew), Virgil Gueteriz (special friend), grandson’s, Alex Holden and Nancen Jay Farek. For his love of Flatonia and golf the family asks that Memorials be made to the E. A. Arnim Museum or the Flatonia Golf Association.
