Inurnment with military honors will be at a later date at Black Hills National Cemetery near Sturgis, SD. ∼ CT3 US NAVY With a final crack of the bat, Kenneth "Blue" Herman (75) of Rapid City, SD sailed over the fence and out of his home ballpark for the last time on June 5, 2020 surrounded by his family, following a lengthy battle with COPD. Ken was born to Donald & Katherine Herman in Rapid City, SD on August 2, 1944 where he graduated from Rapid City High School in 1962. Two weeks before graduation, he and his buddies, Dean Wiechmann and Jerry Ludeman joined the US Navy. The guys returned to graduate, and the next day left for their Navy service. Ken was proud of his service as a communications specialist. He was honorably discharged from the Navy on July 8, 1965. In August 1965 he went to work for Black Hills Pack in Rapid City, SD where he spent 7 years in the shipping department and 17 ½ years in sales. Ken married Sharlyne "Charlie" Hrabe on October 29, 1966. From this marriage came their two children, Tami and Todd. In 1972 Ken was transferred to Bismarck, ND – but moved back to Rapid City for good in 1979 and continued working in the food sales industry until he retired in 2006. On February 14th, 1981, Ken married Alice "Spike" Bushman. They were married for 39 years. Throughout his life Ken loved playing softball, golf, bean bags, bowling, fishing, and camping with his many great friends. His claim to fame was his dancing ability and he won many dancing competitions throughout his young life. Whenever Ken and Spike would go out, the ladies were always clamoring to dance with Ken. He additionally enjoyed 50's and 60's music and the LA Dodgers. He had no enemies and was very caring and kind to all. Anyone who ever met him knew they had a friend in him. He was a lifetime member of the Elks and Elks bowling chairman, organizing many bowling trips. He also was a member of the Moose Lodge, VFW and American Legion. He was past president of the Men's Rapid City Bowling Association and was inducted into the Hall of Fame for Meritorious Service in 1996. Ken loved his annual spring training trips to see Tami and Todd in Arizona where he went to numerous baseball games and made several trips to Rocky Point, Mexico. Ken and Todd would also take trips with several of his buddies to go see baseball games at Wrigley Field in Chicago – his "other favorite" team. On these trips, he was given the name Blue - as Blue is the name of a character in the movie "Old School" that resembled him. Ken was the only father that was ever asked to go. When other fathers asked if they could go, they were told no - they weren't Blue. Ken is survived by his wife, Spike (Alice), his brother Don (Mary Jo) Herman, his sister Judy Dean (Dennis Amburn), his children Tami (Mike) Nelson, Goodyear, AZ; Todd (Shelley Marsh) Herman, Phoenix, AZ; and his stepdaughter Lynn (Earl) Bartholow, Sioux Falls, SD; his grandchildren Danica (Mike) Ward, Buckeye, AZ; Trae Herman, Phoenix, AZ; Tayler (Colleen Wall) Herman, Phoenix, AZ; two great-grandchildren, Thomas Herman and Griffin Wall, step-grandchildren Emily and Chloe Kimball, Minneapolis, MN; Presley and Josie Kimball, Sioux Falls, SD. He is preceded in death by his parents, Don & Katherine Herman, his brother Mike and his sister Betty Ellen.
