Bio

Colonel Steve Veselka, U.S.A.R. (Ret.), P.E., passed away on May 17, 2005, at his home in Angleton. Born on February 20, 1930, he was the only child of Joe and Belle Veselka. He grew up on the family farm between Angleton and Danbury. He graduated from Angleton High School in 1947. He attended junior college at Shriner's Institute in Kerrville, Texas, and graduated from the University of Houston with a bachelor's degree in mathematics and electrical engineering in 1951. He began his professional engineering career with Houston Lighting and Power after graduation. He served on active duty in the United States Army from May 1954 until June 1956. While stationed at Fort Monmouth, New Jersey, he met and later married Anna C. (Nancy) Ploplis on June 25, 1955. The couple began their married life together at Fort Huachuca, Arizona. He returned to HL&P after fulfilling his active-duty military obligation. The couple moved to Pearland in 1963 and raised their two children in the northern part of Brazoria County. His early years with The Light Company were spent in the transmissions division specifically researching the problems and solutions of corrosion on electrical power lines and transformers. The latter third of his engineering career was focused on the construction and eventual operations of the South Texas Project nuclear power plant. Colonel Veselka continued his military service in the United States Army Reserve as a member of the 75th Maneuver Area Command in Houston. He graduated from The United States Army Command and General Staff College in 1973. He completed the National Security Management course from the Industrial College of the Armed Forces in 1975. He completed his service to his country with the rank of colonel in the United States Army Reserve, retiring February 20, 1990. Colonel Veselka and his wife returned to the family farm in 1988. He retired from The Light Company after 38 years on April 1, 1992. He was a member of St. Anthony's Catholic Church in Danbury. He was an active member of American Legion Post 241 and served in several leadership roles for the post. He is preceded in death by his parents, Joe Veselka and Belle Breeding Veselka. He is survived by his loving wife of 49 years, Anna C. (Nancy) Veselka; children, James E. Veselka, M.D., and wife, Mary Ellen, of Angleton, and Virginia A. Gorman and husband, Roger, of Forest, Virginia; and five grandsons. Memorials may be made in his name to the American Cancer Society, St Anthony's Catholic Church or to the charity of your choice. Visitation will be held at St. Anthony's Catholic Church in Danbury on Friday, May 20, 2005, from 4:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. A Christian Wake will be held in his honor at 7:00 p.m. A funeral Mass is planned at 10:00 a.m. Saturday, May 21, 2005, at St. Anthony's Catholic Church in Danbury with interment at St. Anthony's Cemetery in Danbury. Pallbearers will be his grandsons, Paul Gorman, Kyle Veselka, Ryan Veselka, Nicolas Gorman and Philip Gorman, and close friend Daryn Vrazel. Honorary pallbearers will be Paul Vrazel, Fred Garza, Roger Collins, James Collins, Glen Moody and Paul Harvey. Arrangements by Palms Funeral Home.
