Bio

William (Bill) Elwood McGee, 92, longtime resident of Scottsdale, passed away peacefully among loving family members Sunday, March 9th, 2003. Bill was born fourth among ten on June 18, 1910 in Nampa, ID and was reared on a family farm in Kirtland, NM. With a fifth-grade education, McGee became a self-taught, successful and noteworthy Indian Trader among Arizona’s Hop and Navajo Indians. His life long Indian trading career began at Greasewood, with added post ownerships at Na-ah-tee, Bitahochee, and Coal Mine Mesa. He built a major Indian trading hub at Keams Canyon and also owned posts at Polacca and remote Pinon, AZ. In 1959, he opened McGee’s Indian Den in Scottsdale, including an Indian Museum, and also owned drug stores in west Phoenix. Bill was a skillful pilot, avid collector, gifted businessman and devout member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints (LDS). He and Louise, his love of 53 years, traveled worldwide and enjoyed many summers together in the cool weather of Campbell River, BC, Canada, where Bill was a dedicated boatman and successful salmon fisherman. McGee is survived by three sisters, Ruth, Stella and Celia, two brothers, Ellis and Clifton, along with three loving daughters and their husbands, Donna Barber (Bernie), Nadean Tryon (Lyle)), Joyce June (Dennis), plus 12 grandchildren, 12 great-grandchildren and 3 great-great-grandchildren. Visitation for Bill McGee will be from 6:00 p.m. – 8:00 p.m., Friday, March 14, 2003, at Green Acres Mortuary, 401 N. Hayden Rd., Scottsdale. Services will be at 10:30 a.m., Saturday, March 15, 2003, at LDS Mtn. Shadows Ward, 6265 N. 82nd St., Scottsdale, with viewing from 9:30 a.m. – 10:30 a.m. Interment will be at Green Acres Memorial Gardens following the services.
