Bio

Morris J. Freestone , age 66, passed away August 14, 2005 in Sun City West, Ariz. He was born in Vernal, Utah on Sept. 26, 1938 to James Batty and Ethel Mae Winn Freestone. He married Shirley Dennis of Eugene, Ore. on Dec. 26, 1971 in Seattle, Wash. Morris graduated from South Eugene High School in Eugene, Ore. and attended the University of Oregon in Eugene. Morris was active in the ski industry both in retail and wholesale ski equipment and was part owner of a ski shop in Eugene. He was a member of the Oregon National Guard as a young adult. Morris lived in Vernal on and off throughout his life. He has also lived in Eugene, Ore.; Seattle, Wash.; Las Vegas, Nev., and of late, Sun City West, Ariz. During his professional life, Morris most recently was a real estate mortgage broker. He was involved in many other endeavors throughout his life. He owned a contracting business, sold commercial real estate and built his own home. He loved his family, golf, fishing, the outdoors, seeing beautiful places and classical music. He liked to talk with others about politics, economics and capital ventures. One remarkable characteristic of this tall, dark and handsome man was how quickly so many people grew to adore, love and appreciate him. Morris had a heart valve replacement a little over two years ago. Immediately following his participation in a family reunion in Oregon in July, Morris suffered a severe stroke caused by a staph infection. The massive infection ravaged his body causing premature death. He is survived by his wife, Shirley Freestone; his children, Erik Daniel Freestone of Washington, D.C. (wife Melissa and three grandchildren: Kelly, Jennifer and William) step-son, Roger Daniels of Anthem, Ariz. (two step-grandchildren, Trevor and Breona); his brother, Reginald W. Freestone of Vernal; sisters, Julie Ann Weikel of Portland, Ore. and Suzanne Workman of Salem, Ore. He is preceded in death by his parents, and one son, Jay Daniel Freestone who died as an infant on January 10, 1960. A memorial service will be held on Saturday, August 20, 2005 at 11 a.m. at Thomson-Blackburn Vernal Mortuary. Published in the Vernal Express Aug 17, 2005
