James Ray, Sr. married Caroline C. Bennett* about 1838 at either Talladega Co., AL or at Georgia; d. near Minden, LA. Per their daughter Nancy E. Ray Bailey's death certificate from Callahan Co., TX, the info given by her husband G. W. Bailey (George Washington) states that Nancy's mother was Caroline, born Alabama and her father was James Ray, born Troup Co., GA. James' parents are unknown. Caroline's parents were Benjamin Bennett, b. either NJ or VA in abt 1778, d. testate at Perry Co., AL 1826; and Susanna Watters, b. VA abt. 1784, d. Perry Co., AL post 1830 federal census. Susanna is listed as Susan Bennett, head of house, with 5 children living with her. Susanna/Susan's parents were Joseph Watters, Rev. War soldier, NJ and Sarah Collins who was either born in NJ or at Culpeper Co., VA; both died at Oglethorpe Co., GA, Sarah unknown death date and Joseph died between 3 Aug 1813 (will date) and 3 May 1814 (probate of Joseph's will). Caroline and James Ray had 7 children born between 1840 and 1856: James Marion (on Confederate service record); Sarah F.; Susanna W.; Benjamin B.; Joseph J.; Nancy E.; and M. E. (Michael Edward) who was my great-grandfather, b. abt 1856 at Minden, Webster Co., LA, d. 1936 at Elk City, OK, buried at Ural Cemetery, unknown gravesite. Wife Sarah Margaret Bailey, b. abt 1859, Yalobusha Co., MS, d. 1940 at Elk City, OK, buried Ural Cemetery, dau. of Isaac Thacker Bailey, b. South Carolina ca. 1815, died 1883 Collin Co., TX, buried at Fitz Hugh Cemetery, Forest Grove and Marion/Marian Speir, b. Alabama abt 1822; died abt 1888 at Howard Co., TX. *See Caroline C.
