Dowd, 77, of 157 Maple Ave., a supply officer for the federal government for 32 years before retiring in 1971, died Friday at Newport Hospital. He was the husband of Hazel E. (Martin) Dowd. Born in Newport, a son of the late Thomas J. and Alice (Buckley) Dowd, he was a lifelong resident of the Newport area. Mr. Dowd was a Navy veteran of World War II, stationed on the Island of Okinawa during the invasion of Japan. He was awarded the World War II Victory Medal, the American Area Medal, and the Asiatic-Pacific medal. During his career he served in a number of positions at the Naval training center on Goat Island and the Newport Naval Base in Newport. He was chosen to study radiology at the U.S. Government Training Station in Edgewood, Md. He was selected to observe the first atomic blast at Cape Mercury, Nev., and briefly served as an assistant to the Radiac defense office. He was recently accepted as a member of the Dennis E. Collins Ancient Order of Hibernians. He was a member of the A.A.R.P. and the N.A.R.F.E. Besides his wife he is survived by three sons, three sisters and five grandchildren.
