Sherman was born December 25, 1924 in Klickitat, Washington to Thirza Mary (Schofield) and Cyrus Adam Braman. His father was a woodsman and had left Minnesota to work with a lumber company in Washington. When his contract was fulfilled, the family returned to their state of Cass Lake, Minnesota and Sherman, his three brothers and sister were raised in Cass Lake. Sherman attended Cass Lake elementary and Cass Lake High school. At the age of 17, he enlisted in the U.S. Navy and went to Great Lakes training depot. His first ship assignment was the U.S. Giriadie. There would be six more ship assignments in his 20 year career, U.S. Pickaway, Sperry, Frontier, Remey, Renville and the Skagit. While aboard the US Remey, Sherman participated in 13 invasions, 2 typhoons, and 2 battles in the Surigao Straits in the Phillipines, a classic action in which the US Remey delivered a successful night torpedo attack against the Japanese battleships. The campaigns in the Pacific were intense but you could feel that pride and honor in serving his country. On August 24, 1946, Sherman was united in marriage to Erma "Corkie" Reinders in San Diego, Ca. Corkie came by way of San Angelo, Texas. She was a long distance operator during WWII. They were blessed with two children Richard and Janet. On January 10, 1953, they lost Richard in a drowning accident. Sherman retired from the Navy in 1962, He went to work for the San Diego City Schools. Working with the athletic department and young men in their quest for greatness on the playing field or in the classroom was a passion that would sustain him for another 20 years and another retirement that came in 1984. Corkie and Sherman enjoyed retirement and traveled in their moto home. Fishing poles were always part of the luggage. They became very active in their local VFW Post #3788 in San Diego. Sherman was a WWII Veteran. The love of their lives was their four grandchildren, Melissa, Ryan, Jake and Andrew. Corkie passed away on March 19, 1996 and Sherman came to Creston to live. In 2002, Crest Haven became Sherm's permanent residence. He never met a stranger. He always had a joke and a thank you.
