Shirley Jane Conley Godwin died on October 24, 2019. She was born on May 23, 1927, in Tulsa, Oklahoma to Carl Allen and Maude Phillips Conley. She was educated in public schools in Tulsa and Muskogee, Oklahoma, and Midland, Texas. At the University of Oklahoma, she earned a Bachelor of Art and a Master of Social Work degrees. In 1945 she married Captain Johnie R. Godwin of Jackson, Mississippi. In his 30-year Air Force career they had five children and lived in seven states, Washington D.C., Portuguese Azores, and Great Britain. Only briefly employed as a social worker, she used her skills wherever they lived as a Community Volunteer with the Red Cross, Boy and Girl Scouts, Air Force Family Services, Hospice, elementary school mentoring, and varied services in her church including librarian, teacher, Stephen Minister, and grief counselor. Memberships include Phi Beta Kappa, and McFarlin United Methodist Church. She was preceded in death by her parents, husband Colonel Johnie R. Godwin, son Lt. Johnie R. Godwin, Jr., brothers Jack N. Conley, Major Allen Conley, and sisters, Ruth Conley, Edith Truesch, and Nancy Swindler. She is survived by four children Leslie Mille of Virginia Beach, VA, Judy Godwin of Norman, OK, Allen Godwin of Bartlesville, OK, and Janet Godwin of Iowa City, IA and several grandchildren, nieces and nephews. Her Celebration of Life service will be November 14, 2019, at 1:00 p.m. at McFarlin United Methodist Church. Published on November 1, 2019.
