Cecil died Sunday, December 9, 2018, at Good Samaritan Society in Wagner, South Dakota. Cecil Roger Mashino, son of Blanche (Yusten) and Clay Mashino, was born July 24, 1934, in Morocco, Indiana. He attended school at Ft. Randall and graduated from the 8th grade at District 61. Cecil was married to Betty Hambek on June 15, 1960. Three children were born to them: Carla, Dustin and Tammy. Cecil started farming on his own at the age of 16, renting land from Ted Lauts, a half-mile south of where Dustin and his family live today. After 5 years he was drafted into the Army and sold his cows for $90-$100 per head. He returned from service in 1958 renting different farms in the community. In 1967, he purchased the land that the family currently calls home. Cecil was a member of Immanuel Lutheran Church and the American Legion Post #78. He was a County Supervisor for Dist. 3 for many years. On the afternoon of December 9, 2018, the Lakeview Colony sang Christmas Carols outside Cecil's room. Their amazing voices brought us all peace, especially Cecil. Minutes later, Betty's reassuring words of "I love you" and her gentle touch to Cecil's hand were the final moments that led him home. Survivors include: Betty, his wife of 58 years; Carla (Steve) Loop, Chadron, NE, and their children, Lacey (Bob) Wood and daughter Aida, and Laney (James) Ferguson and their daughters Emrie & Harlow; Dustin (Tammera) Mashino, Spencer, NE, and their daughters, Alix (Andrew) Ambriz and son Zander, Jamie (Dylan) Haun, Kelli and Kaci; and Tammy (Brian) Weisser, Wagner, SD, and their children Bryce and Bridget. Surviving siblings include: Shirley Bessert, Pierre, SD; Lorraine (Oliver) Nelson, Spencer, NE; Betty Wieser, Columbus, NE; Rosie (Rick) Kester, Minden, NE; Charles (Agnes) Mashino, Spencer, NE; and Thelma Kopetjtka, Verdigre, NE. Cecil was preceded in death by his parents, Blanche & Clay Mashino, 18-month-old brother Orvill, and sister Gladys Fredrickson. Cecil loved his wife and family, the land and the Lord. He had a passion for raising respectful kids and good cattle. He worked hard to provide for his family and has left behind a legacy to be passed on for generations. He loved going to cattle auctions and the search for one more good piece of equipment to buy. These two things alone, found him traveling the countryside sharing stories of the past and making new friends along the way. Cecil never wrote a book but enjoyed reading many. He greatly enjoyed talking on the phone to neighbors, friends and family. He especially loved to hear about the happenings and successes of his grandchildren, or something as simple as they may be coming home for a visit. He will be remembered most for his passion of perfection and his amazing ability to recall details of history, never forgetting a face or name of someone he met. Here's hoping all the fences are straight in heaven and the chant of the auctioneer is loud. For those wishing to extend your sympathies to Betty, she will only be able to attend Saturday. We understand it is a busy time of year. If you are unable to attend either of the services, please join us for the meal at the Community Hall in Spencer, following the committal. We'd love to have you come share stories and memories of Cecil. Family suggest memorials be designated to National Cemetery in Spencer or Spencer Fire Department and Rescue Unit.
