Bio

IRENE MARGARET TOWNLEY passed away peacefully at the age of 95 in the home she shared with her son Bob in Houston on Saturday, December 21, 2019. She was born in Frydek, Texas, on July 13, 1924 to John and Mary Petter. She was predeceased by her parents, her husband of 58 years, Slim Townley, three siblings and her daughters Mary Townley and Patty Mathews. She is survived by four children: Bob Townley, Barbara Picat, Ina Bawaya and Rick Townley, her sister Delores Naiser, and many grandchildren, great grandchildren, and great greats, in addition to a number of extended family members. Irene never met a stranger and was loved by all who met her. She graduated from high school at age 16 and went to college at University of Texas for two years to pursue her dream of being a teacher. She married Slim (Louis) Townley on March 5, 1943 when she was 18 years old. They had 6 children between the years 1943-53. Irene worked as a homemaker, which gave her ample opportunities to use her teaching skills with her children, reading and singing to them regularly. As the children got older, she worked in various positions in Houston, including the Post Office, a job she particularly enjoyed. She and Slim built a home in Wallis to be close to her mother when her father died, and they moved to Friendswood when her mother passed away. Family was paramount to Irene. Irene often said she had a wonderful life. She loved adventure and traveled widely to all the US states, Europe, South America and the Caribbean. She was a lovely woman, and she passed her love of fashion and style to her 4 daughters. Irene was a voracious reader, and the home was full of books. When it came to playing 42, Irene was a fierce competitor. She loved celebrations and made sure all of her 6 children had special birthday parties. Christmas in the Townley household was a big affair, with many presents, singing and merriment. Her melodious laughter and smile will never be forgotten. Irene was sustained by her strong Roman Catholic faith and is surely singing in the heavenly choirs now. We will miss her forever. A rosary will be recited at 12:00 P.M. with funeral services to be held in her honor at 1:00 P.M. at the Jeter Memorial Funeral Home, 311 N. Friendswood, Texas 77546 (281) 992-7200 with Deacon Jesse Tollett. Interment will follow at the Mt. Olivet Cemetery in Dickinson, Texas.
