Bio

Monroe Carl Ernest Hengst, 98, of La Grange, passed away peacefully with family at his bedside, at St. Mark’s Hospital on Tuesday, December 17, 2019. Monroe was born in O’Quinn, TX on April 9, 1921, the son of Rudolph and Ella (Krause) Hengst. Monroe was a carpenter for the majority of his life, and spent numerous years as a foreman for Karl Thuemler Construction Company and Scholtz Construction Company. He was instrumental in the construction of numerous commercial structures in La Grange and surrounding communities. Years after officially retiring, he continued to do small carpentry jobs for Colorado Valley Telephone and for various citizens of La Grange. Monroe was a lifetime member of St. Paul Evangelical Lutheran Church in La Grange. He is survived by his wife of 74 years, Bernice (Heinecke) Hengst; three children: Lana (Hengst) Palmisano; Monte Hengst and wife, Kimbel all of Boerne, TX; Duke Hengst and wife, Cindy of La Grange, TX; seven grandchildren: Kirsten (Hengst) Kassem and husband, Chad of Austin, TX; Cody Hengst and wife, Lauren of Weimar, TX; Mallory Hengst; Brett Hengst and wife, Zoe all of San Marcos, TX; Hunter Hengst and wife, Kendall of La Grange; step-granddaughter, Sarah (Palmisano) Clardy and husband, Matt of Folkston, GA; step-grandson, Alexander McCormack of Madrid, Spain; three great-grandchildren: Dylan, Lyla, and Wren Clardy; along numerous nieces and nephews. Monroe was preceded in death by his parents; and his sisters: Ora Nell; Lucille: and Ethlynn. Visitation will be held on Saturday, December 21, 2019 from 1:00 to 2:00 p.m. at St. Paul Evangelical Lutheran Church, 110 W. Walnut, St. La Grange, TX 78945. Funeral Services will be held at St. Paul Evangelical Lutheran Church, at 2:00 p.m. on Saturday, December 21, 2019. Burial will follow at the Cedar Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Gardenia E. Janssen Animal Shelter, 240 Svoboda Ln.
