Bio

Home going services for Mrs. Mickie D. Perkins will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Friday, December 13, 2019, at First United Pentecostal Church of Leesville, with Reverends Arthur Richmond Jr., Mark Christian and Keary Jordan officiating. Interment will follow in Beauregard Cemetery, DeRidder, under the direction of Rush Funeral Home, Oakdale. Mickie Perkins, age 91, born in Vernon Parish in 1928, was a wonderful mother and grandmother with a funny and dynamic personality that brought smiles and laughter to her many friends and loved ones. She grew up in the post-depression era and lived in the Cravens community and in Fort Polk’s Rifle Range area as her father and older brother worked on a WPA project. Mickie graduated from Pitkin High School and married Sherril Willis also of Cravens. The two had a total of twelve children of which two died in infancy. Her husband died in a job-related accident, and Mickie was a young widow with ten children. Mickie lived in the Vernon Parish area for the majority of her life and devoted her support to her children, who became the pride of her life. Mickie was proud of her children’s accomplishments which included veterans of the U.S. Marines Corp. and U.S. Army, a minister of the gospel of Christ, a minister’s wife, an IT specialist, a school principal, schoolteachers, a school administrative secretary, and a former Boise Cascade employee. It was no doubt that Mickie’s strong work ethics and faithful belief in God influenced her children’s accomplishments in life. Mickie loved her children and loved God. She was a member of the First United Pentecostal Church of Leesville and greatly enjoyed gospel music. She was a resident of the Woodlands Healthcare Center, where she became a favorite among the nursing staff. She served as an advocate for her fellow residents, worked in the center’s store, and was a bingo champion in her own right. Mickie loved reading, puzzle books, and most of all, her daily supply of coffee. She visited every hall and rewarded her greeters with her contagious little grin and her quick responsive “yeah” to all. Mickie’s positive view of life brightened the day of many and will be greatly missed by her friends and loved ones. She taught all of us the great lesson that life is too short to not be happy every day! She was preceded in death by her husband, S.M.
