Betty Lou Kliment was born July 22, 1943, to Henry and Martha (Sokol) Kliment at Dr. Carrig’s clinic in Bloomfield, Nebraska. The family lived three miles north and two miles east of Wausa where she attended Golden Rod School District 110 in Cedar County until the 8th grade. She was an English Language Learner, as she spoke only Czech in the home prior to starting Kindergarten. She graduated from Wausa High School in 1961. She attended Southern State Teachers College in Springfield, South Dakota earning a one-year secretarial certificate. The summer of 1962 Betty began work at Wausa Public Schools as a secretary. She then worked as a cashier and bookkeeper for Consumers Public Power District (now NPPD). On May 12, 1966, she married Robert Skalberg. That fall Bob began working at Vulcraft and they moved to Norfolk. Bob and Betty were blessed with four children: Bradley, Bryan, Barry, and Rebecca. They joined St. John’s Lutheran Church in the spring of 1970. Betty was a stay at home mother when the children were small. She began working at Norfolk Public Schools as a kitchen manager at Jefferson Elementary in 1983. She served warm meals and warm smiles to thousands of children for 22 years. When she and Bob retired, they loved to travel to see their children and to see the world. Their favorite stops included the Northeastern states, Alaska, the Gulf Shores, California, Oregon, and Cancun, Mexico. Betty made the trip of a lifetime to the Czech Republic in 2006 with her daughter Becky. She visited all four villages and homes that her great-grandparents and grandparents came from. Betty was a great cook and understood that a family that shares a meal is a family that shares a lifetime. Her devotion to family extended far into the tree. She was more than related, she was a loving friend to all of her cousins. She loved being a grandma and her grandchildren adored her. She was a devoted fan. She spent many hours on bleachers cheering on her children and she loved watching all Husker sports and the Kansas City Royals. To keep busy in her retirement, she substituted for Norfolk Public Schools as a para educator and in the kitchen. She also volunteered for the American Red Cross Blood Drives, St. John’s Lutheran Church, Meals on Wheels, as a room mother and the Boy Scouts. She is survived by her husband, Robert; sons, Bradley and special friend Jennifer Fischer, of Norfolk, Bryan of Portland, Oregon, Barry and Traci of Grand Island, Nebraska; and daughter, Rebecca and Seth Snedigar of Valley, Alabama. She is also survived by eleven grandchildren, Kallie and Issak Skalberg of Norfolk, Alex and Emily DeMaderios and Nikolas and Livia Skalberg of Portland, Oregon, Samuel, Cara, and Lucas Skalberg of Grand Island, Nebraska, and Madyson and Connor Snedigar of Valley, Alabama; two brothers, Leonard and Jan Kliment of Omaha, and Gary and Barbara Kliment of Lincoln; as well as four nieces and their husbands and children; and many of her special cousins and her coffee buddies. She was preceded in death by her parents, Henry and Martha Kliment; her parents-in-law, James and Loretta Skalberg; and a nephew, Jeffrey Kliment. Memorials may be directed to the family for later designation.
