Bio

Weldon Gene Berger, a former Taylor city commissioner, mayor and a founder of Balderson Berger Equipment Company, died at his home in Taylor, Texas on Thursday, June 9, 2005. He was 76. Services will be held at 4 p.m. Monday, June 13, at Condra Funeral Home with the Rev. Jim Newman officiating. Visitation will be Sunday from 6 to 8 p.m. He was born Oct. 13, 1928, to John Martin and Lillian (Stefka) Berger, in West, Texas, but his family moved to Taylor when he was 8 years old. He remained a Taylor resident for the rest of his life. He married Mildred Ann (Kurecka) Berger on Dec. 11, 1952. Weldon was an avid fisherman and hunter and loved to work on machinery and old cars. He could always be found outside doing something. He also loved to tell his family how to do things--usually his way. He believed in giving back to the community and was involved in several civic organizations and community activities. He was elected to Taylor City Commission in 1971 and served on the governing body throughout the 1970s. He also served as the mayor of Taylor for many years. His son, Jeff Berger, followed in his father's footsteps, serving on the Taylor City Council and as the city's mayor. Berger co-founded Balderson Berger Equipment Company in 1961, and was president of the metal fabrication company, now BABECO, until his retirement in 1994. Weldon Berger was a member of the First Presbyterian Church, serving several terms on the board of deacons. He was preceded in death by his parents, his wife, Mildred Berger, and infant son, John Jay. He is survived by his wife of seven years, Mary Ann (Martinka) Berger, his children, Jeff Berger and wife Rudie, daughter Roxanne Carnes and husband Tim; step-children Mark and Rebecca Krueger, John and Vicki Hanacik, Kent and Michelle Hanacik; his sisters, Betty Ruzicka and Lillian Holmstrom and her husband T.W.; 16 grandchildren, six great-grandchildren, numerous nieces, nephews and cousins. Memorials may be made to Temple College of Taylor or The Health Center at Johns Community Hospital. Special thanks to Dr. Brian Shimkus and everyone at Southern Care Hospice. Pallbearers are Jeff Berger, Jarod Balusek, Tim Carnes, John Stacy, Leroy Kubala, Brian Tyree, Don Radomski, Cole Carnes and Egan Carnes. Honorary pallbearers are his family at Babeco.
