My great-grandma Mildred Mueller was born on April 15, 1920. She was a feisty lady that I loved dearly. She was born into a family of nine children. She was the middle one. She grew up in the country, so for entertainment, they would spend time in the orchard north of their house. Her and her siblings would identify birds. She loved birds until the end. She attended Garden Valley District 43 Grade School, then later graduated from Halstead High School in 1939. She lived with other families in town during her first two years of high school. I learned from her son, my grandpa, that she told a story about not sure how her mother was able to find enough pieces from one chicken to feed each of them one piece. Then when she got married and fried a chicken, how much she enjoyed eating two pieces. For twenty-seven years, she helped run the Mueller Dairy just outside of Halstead, KS. They had a drive-out dairy. She would fill the gallons of milk and sell it. She enjoyed the dairy life, and felt that it was a nice and healthy way to raise her children. For three years, she would fill 60 gallons of milk, and then haul them to town to three grocery stores to sell. She also worked at the Halstead Hospital. After retiring, she volunteered serving senior citizen meals, delivering mail, and attending the information desk at the Halstead Hospital. She passed away on September 2, 2019. There isn't a headstone to mark her grave yet.
