Bio

Carl M. Nicholson was born on 15 Dec 1916 in Custer County, Nebraska. He was the son of Elmer Jack Nicholson and Anna Nelson. Carl married Elaine J. Monroe on on 16 Sep 1939 in South Dakota. Carl and Elaine had three children: Larry, Linda E. (twin) and Lyndon Monroe (twin). Linda and Lyndon had health issues, possibly cystic fibrosis. Lyndon died in 1944 at the age of 16 months and Linda died in 1963 at the age of 19. Carl passed away 01 Sep 1997 at his home in East Liverpool, Ohio, following a lengthy illness. A memorial service was held Friday, September 5th at 7:00 p.m. at the Dawson Funeral Home with Rev. Robert Mash presiding. Carl was survived by his son, Larry C. Nicholson, with whom he resided. In addition to Carl's twins, Linda and Lyndon, he was preceded in death by his wife, Elaine, in 1974; his parents; and a sister, Julia Rosezella (Nicholson) Van Cleave. Carl always had an interest in airplanes. He began flight lessons prior to graduating from high school. In the early years, he made money by giving people airplane rides. Then he became a flight instructor in Kansas and South Dakota. During World War II he was an instructor for the Spartan #3 British Flyers Training School in Miami, Oklahoma. The School was preparing British Air Corps Cadets, primarily from England, on how to pilot aircraft in preparation for their service in their countries' war efforts in Europe. According to a report, Carl was considered an outstanding instructor. He had the highest number of originally assigned students that received their commission. Carl spent most of his career as a pilot for corporations. He worked for companies in Tulsa, OK; Casper, WY; Denver, CO; Minneapolis, MN; San Diego, CA; and Phoenix, AZ. Additionally, he started the first airport in Faulkton, SD, where he instructed flight lessons, and for a time, he was a crop duster. Carl was Air Transport rated and Float Plane rated. He had flown over the United States, and to Alaska, Canada, Mexico, and Cuba. When Carl retired from flying, he owned and operated an airplane parts store in Phoenix. There are gravestones for Carl in two cemeteries. One gravestone is in the Mount Hope Cemetery, San Diego, near the graves of his wife and daughter, and the other gravestone is in the Rose Hill Cemetery, Callaway, Nebraska, where his parents were buried.
