Bio

Born April 11, 1910. Crossed the Bar on May 26, 2000. As a young woman in Waterloo, Iowa, Elfriede Eleanore Emilie Caroline Kammeyer Maughan challenged the expectations of her time and set off on her own in the midst of the Great Depression on a great adventure. While working for the U.S. military in Washington, D.C., she met, fell in love, and married Elvin F. Maughan, U.S. Air Corps. Together, they shared 41 years on earth and are now reunited for the rest of their lives. Dearly loved wife, mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, aunt, sister, friend, person. She lived with wit, humor, dignity, and courage. Hers were an inquiring mind, an endless curiosity, a skeptical eye, and a generous heart. Loved and remembered by her son, Peter, and his wife, Joyce; daughters Kathryn Pyrah and her husband, Ted, Mary H. Maughan, and Janet Coleman and her husband, Mac; her brother, Fred Kammeyer; five nieces and nephews; 14 grandchildren, five great-grandchildren, and the many friends, known and unknown, whose lives she blessed. Never to be forgotten. Missed only until we see her again. A memorial service will be held at 11:30 a.m., October 21, 2000, at the Holladay 28th Ward, 2625 East Milo Way. No flowers, please. In their place, a contribution to the Utah Opera in her name would be a kind and fitting remembrance. Published in the Deseret News: Oct 18, 2000
