NORTH MANKATO — A funeral service for James L. Berg, age 90, of North Mankato, Minn., formerly of Winnebago, Minn., will be 11 a.m. Saturday, Aug. 3, 2019, at Lakeview Funeral Home in Fairmont. Visitation will be 10-11 a.m. Saturday, Aug. 3, 2019, at Lakeview Funeral Home in Fairmont. Burial will be at Welcome City Cemetery, with military honors provided by the Welcome American Legion Post 553. James passed away peacefully in his sleep Monday morning, July 29, 2019, at Monarch Meadows Vista Prairie Assisted Living in North Mankato, Minn. Lakeview Funeral Home and Cremation Service in Fairmont is assisting the family with arrangements. James was born Aug. 16, 1928, in Dunnell, Minn., to Charley J. and Anna (Krona) Berg. James graduated from Sherburn High School in 1947 and later that year enlisted in the U.S. Army Air Force, where he was stationed in Hawaii, the Philippines and served with the army of occupation in Japan. While in Japan, his mother passed away in Dunnell and he was unable to attend her funeral. Upon honorable discharge, he married Clarice Folz of Sherburn in 1951. James worked for over 40 years for Interstate Power Company, working his way up from a lineman to district sales manager. His work transferred him several times, causing him to reside in Elmore, Granada, Northrop and Winnebago, where he made countless friends. He loved his wife and children above all else and was an active member of the United Methodist Church. He enjoyed watching all Minnesota sports teams, family gatherings, FaceTime phone calls, working on the Elmore ambulance crew and lutefisk. His big heart, love of life, sense of humor and positive energy endeared himself to others. His fierce determination and spirit to live was visible many times as his health declined and he bravely battled various ailments. He will be dearly missed by all who knew him. James is survived by his wife of 68 years, Clarice; daughter, Deana (Ron) Riley of North Mankato; his son, Jim (Debbie) of Minneapolis; two sisters, Dorothy Willenberg of Pasadena, Calif., Ruth Carlson of East Chain; brother, Dick (Bonnie) Berg of St. Paul; and numerous grandchildren and great-grandchildren. Special thanks for the wonderful care provided by the staff at Monarch Meadows in North Mankato. www.lakeviewfuneralhome.net
