CHESTER “BUSS” ELAM, 86, of Winfield, Kansas, passed away Wednesday afternoon, September 23, 2009 at Riverview Manor in Oxford. Born April 16, 1923 in Winfield, Kansas, he was the son of Chester and Leona (Snook) Elam. He was raised and educated in Winfield, graduating Winfield High School in 1947. Buss also went to auctioneer’s school. He owned and operated Elam Tractor Service in Winfield, Kansas and later Elam Tractor Rental in Bakersfield, California from 1961 to 1993. Buss moved to Rogers, Arkansas in 1993 and moved back to Winfield in 2001. He was united in marriage to Genie Shockey on June 25, 1947 in Winfield. The couple later divorced and Genie passed away in 2001. Buss was united in marriage to Mary Lou (Sitton) McKnab on May 13, 1982 in Las Vegas, Nevada. Mary Lou preceded him in death in December 1997. He was a member of the Elk’s Lodge, the Winfield American Legion and the Veteran’s of Foreign Wars. He was also a member of the Footprinters in Bakersfield, California. His family includes: His brother: Abe Elam of Winfield; His sister: Vada Stone and husband, Roy of Rogers, AR; His nephews: Dan Stone and wife, Candy of Bishop, CA; Tom Stone and wife, Linda of Bakersfield, CA; and Michael Elam of Las Vegas, NV; His nieces: Marsha Archer and husband, Charles of Haysville, KS; Kathy Burns and husband, Doug of Burden; and Linda Platz and husband, Russell of Converse, TX; and His 12 great nieces and nephews and 12 great-great nieces and nephews. In addition to his parents and wives, Buss was preceded in death by his sisters, Marguerite Schroeder and Betty Elam. Cremation has been effected. Memorial services will be held on Tuesday, October 13, 2009 at 2:00 P.M. at Tisdale United Methodist Church. Private inurnment will take place at a later date. Memorials have been established in Buss’s name for the Alzheimer’s Association and for the American Cancer Society. Contributions may be made through the funeral home.
