Bio

William "Butch" Foster Hilliard May 12, 1940 - December 21, 2014 Services for William Foster Hilliard will be held at 10:00 a.m., Wednesday, December 24, 2014 at First United Methodist Church in Canton with Rev. Bill Hedges and Rev. Herman Fitzgerald officiating. A graveside service will follow at Hillcrest Cemetery in Canton, under the direction of Hilliard Funeral Home. Visitation will be held from 6:00 p.m. - 8:00 p.m. on Tuesday evening at First United Methodist Church. William Foster Hilliard was born May 12, 1940 in Canton, Texas to Sam and Opal Hilliard. He graduated from Canton High School and went on to receive a Bachelor's of Science degree from East Texas State University, where he was a member of Sigma Phi Epsilon Fraternity. While pursuing his Master's degree from Southern Methodist University, he worked for Texas Instruments. He returned home to run the family hardware store and raise his family in 1970. Butch was a devoted husband and father. He and Sue were married for 40 years, and raised their children in Canton before her death in 2003. They were members of First United Methodist Church. His lifelong passion was his love of his community and his service to it. Butch served on the school board for 22 years, and served as the City of Canton Mayor for 4 years. Butch's greatest joy was his family. As known by many, "Bear" became everyone's grandfather. He loved his morning trip to McDonald's to visit with his friends and bring biscuits back for the grandkids, dogs and horses. His morning rituals were to visit and feed all his friends, family and animals. When not in Canton, you would find him loving his Ben Wheeler "Forge family", where he enjoyed his role as their self-proclaimed P.R. man and town manager. He was preceded in death by his wife, Sue Hilliard; and his parents, Samuel Foster Hilliard and Opal Melinda Nichols Hilliard. Survivors include his children, Bill Hilliard & Amy Huddle, both of Canton; brother and sister-in-law, Charles & Sharon Hilliard of Jermyn; and four grandchildren, Will & Sam Huddle, and Oliver & Elliot Hilliard.
