Bio

Artie Davis Young (99 1/2 yrs) left his physical body on June 1st, following a short illness. Artie was born on December 15, 1919 in the family home in the Rocky Hollow area, northwest of Georgetown, off of CR 245. He was the third child of Willie Bethel and Pearl Lackey Young. He grew up on the family ranch with 5 other siblings. He left the ranch at the age of 15 to continue his education at Georgetown High School, while living in his maternal aunt's barn on 15th St. and working part-time at Thompson's Garage on 8th St. He enlisted in military service on December 31, 1941. He served honorably at the rank of Sergeant in the US Army Air Corps, in the 4th Fighter Group of the 334th Eagle Squadron, stationed in England but also seeing duty in Normandy, North France Ardennes and Rhineland. Upon returning home in October 1945, he married Edith Jewel Nunnery. They had one daughter, Angela Harris. Following World War II, Artie returned to his auto mechanic job with Ralph Freund's Automotive, later becoming Buster Compton Motor Company and then Don Hewlett Automotive. Artie was a founding member and part of the special group who built the physical building housing VFW Post 8587. He remained actively involved in post life until his death. Artie was known for his many stories and mischievous humor. He was always willing to help anyone in need and later in life, he appreciated those who helped him. Artie was the last of a large pioneer family. He is survived by: daughter, Angela and her husband Tim Harris, grandchildren; Laura and Bob Horner of Mineral Wells, Michael and Julia Harris of McAllen and Brian Harris of Lindale and great-grandchildren; Carson and Harper Horner and also, sister-in-law, Pauline Young of Kingsland. In addition to his parents, he is predeceased by: brothers; Will Jr. Ernest Clay and Fred F. Young and sisters; Hazel Shaw and Lena Tucker. In lieu of flowers for those desiring, please make memorial donations to the Ben Snowden VFW Post 8587 at 1000 N. College St. Georgetown, Texas 78626 A time of visitation will be held from 5:00 to 7:00 p.m. on Tuesday, June 11th, 2019 at Ramsey Funeral Home. The funeral service will begin at 10:00 a.m on Wednesday, June 12th, 2019 in the Chapel of Ramsey Funeral Home. Mr. Young will be laid to rest following the funeral at Capital Parks Cemetery in Pflugerville, Texas.
