Thomas, a brother to Don and Jot, and a son of John Smyth and Sarah Teague, was born in South Carolina in 1829. Thomas grew up in Alabama, and moved to Texas in 1850. He farmed in Anderson County for 8 years, and in 1859 came to Grandview in Johnson County where he purchased 870 acres. In 1861 he joined Co. H. 20th Tex. Cav., under Col. Bass. He participated in many battles, and at the battle of Elk Horn was captured and sent to Fort Gibson; hence to Fort Scott, Fort Leavenworth, St. Louis, and finally to the prison at Rock Island. Of the seven brothers who served, none were wounded, and he was the only one to be captured. In 1859, in Ellis County, he married Sarah M. Richardson, a daughter of Wesley and Elizabeth Richardson, and a granddaughter of John Reagor, one of the first settlers of Ellis County. Thomas and Sarah had four children. Thomas amassed some 1500 acres of land, and bred horses and mules. He was the original owner of "Run-after-me", a record holder in the half mile. He also raised fruit, and had one of the finest peach orchards in the county. He owned property in Alvarado, and at one time had a mercantile business there. They were members of the Missionary Baptist Church, he was a Mason and a member of the A.F. & A.M., and was held in high regard in the county. *from the booklet, "Confederate Veterans of Johnson County"
