Source: Times-Standard, 6 May 2007 - Eureka, California Franklin Lewis Wingo passed away on May 4th, 2007, at the age of 75. Frank was one of the greatest men this world will ever know. He gave his all to his family, country, community and most of all his loving wife of 55 years, Helen. He was born on July 28th, 1931, in Kingston, Oklahoma, and moved to Arcata with his wife and son in 1953. In his younger years he was a true cowboy working the Rodeo circuit as well as the Kings ranch in Texas. Frank served as a Sheriffs Deputy and on the Sheriffs Mounted Department for over 30 years. He dedicated an extraordinary amount of time to his community not only with the sheriffs department but also through the NRA classes he taught and his work with Manila community services. Frank served his country in the Korean War and was awarded the Bronze Star. He was an active lifetime member of the American Legion Post 274. He was an avid outdoorsman and loved nothing more than hose backing through the wilderness with his sons and son-in-law. Many great memories were made with family and friends while hunting and fishing with Frank. He was a protector and friend to animals and had a relationship with horses that was admired by all. His horse, Sam, lived to the age of 35 and many wonderful hours were spent by Frank riding with friends while hunting, being a cowboy or searching for a missing person with Humboldt County search and rescue. Every Winter, Frank and Helen would travel to their home in Yuma, Arizona, to enjoy the warm weather and have a great time with their beloved friends. The world could learn many lessons of life from such a great man. He never missed a day of work, always provided for his family and was a cherished Husband, Father, Grandfather and Friend, the world has suffered a great loss with his passing and he will truly be missed by all.
