Funeral services for Sarah Alice Gilmore Millard, 80, of Nacogdoches will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Tuesday, May 14, at Christ Episcopal Church with the Reverend Michael Caldwell officiating. She will be interred beside her husband, George Henry Millard Jr., in Oak Grove Cemetery. He preceded her in death on July 9, 2014. Mrs. Millard entered the larger life on May 10, 2019. Born on March 7, 1939, to Raymond and Inez Gilmore, she graduated from Nacogdoches High School, where she was valedictorian, a cheerleader, Miss NHS, and a basketball sweetheart, in 1957. She then earned her bachelor’s in education from The University of Texas at Austin in 1960. She also earned a master’s degree in 1978 from Stephen F. Austin State University. She taught in Dallas, Waco, Longview, San Augustine, and Nacogdoches. One of her greatest honors was the dedication of the Thomas J. Rusk Middle School yearbook to her by her students. Mrs. Millard was devoted to her church, Christ Episcopal, and served as a member of the vestry and the altar guild. She also was a member of the Daughters of the Republic of Texas, Daughters of the American Revolution, Cum Concilio Club, and Tri Delta sorority. She is survived by her daughters, Claire Edith Gilmore, of Nacogdoches, and Sarah Johanna Gilmore Obed, of Austin; son-in-law, David Jesse Obed, of Austin; stepson, George Millard III, and his wife, Teresa, of Nacogdoches; and stepdaughter, Laura Millard, and her partner, Troy Ficklin, of Austin. Pallbearers will be Mike Bay, Ed Mac Benchoff, Bryan Davis III, John Fleming, John Kingham, John Mast, David Shofner, Derek Snyder, and Bud Wright. Honorary pallbearers will be Mark Clark, Dennis Coffman, Ron Collins, Brent Lindsey, John Mast, George Millard III, Milton Moorer, Roland Muckleroy, John Pack, Bill Patton, Charles Reynolds, Perry Skipper, Jerry Sutton, Billy Willis, Gayle Wyatt, and John Young.
