Doris Marie Forsvall Johnapelus, age 98, passed away on May 8, 2019, surrounded by the love of her family, after a long battle with Alzheimer’s. Doris was born on October 24, 1920, in Georgetown, Texas to Clarence and Bertha Forsvall. As the eldest of 3 children, she was a devoted sister to her brother, Clarence, and sister, Elaine. They spent their entire childhood in Georgetown amongst many family members, close and extended. She attended Southwestern University and then taught school in a one-room schoolhouse to all ages. She then moved to Austin, Texas to begin her long career with the Internal Revenue Service. In addition to working her fulltime job, she began work as a hostess at the NightHawk Restaurant by the University of Texas campus to assist her family with expenses. It was there that she met the love of her life, J.T. (Tom) Johnapelus, as he came into the restaurant to study most every night. They married on November 19, 1949, in Georgetown. Together, they raised two daughters, Lane and Jane, while moving around the Texas oil patch for Tom’s career. No longer working outside the home, Doris helped support the family by taking in alterations. She was a skilled seamstress and made many of her own clothes and all of Lane and Jane’s clothes. She loved cooking homemade meals for her family and some of her specialties were chicken fried steak, biscuits and pies. After the children left home, she returned to work for the IRS until retirement in the early 1990’s. After that, she spent a great deal of time volunteering at St. Martin’s Episcopal Church, upholstering furniture for herself and her family and attending every school and extracurricular event of her grandchildren. She took her job as “Nonnie” very seriously, spoiling her grandchildren with food, love and attention. She treasured every moment with them. She is preceded in death by her husband, Tom, and her brother, Clarence. She is survived by daughters, Lane Johnapelus Rutledge and husband, Steve, and Jane Johnapelus Munoz and husband, James, grandchildren John, Jennifer, Justin, Joseph, Andrew, Dylan and spouses Cayce, Morgan, Morgan, Julie and Christina, and great grandchildren Elliott, Graham, Lyla and Annie. She is also survived by her sister, Elaine Verret, and numerous nieces and nephews. The family would like to give a special thank you to all the caregivers, including the wonderful staff of Heart to Heart Hospice, who have lovingly cared for her these past 10 years, treating her as they would their own mother. A memorial service will be held on May 10, 2019 at 3 pm at St Martin’s Episcopal Church, 717 Sage Road, Houston, Texas, 77056. The Reverend Martin Bastian will officiate. A private internment for immediate family will occur at a later date. A reception will be held in the Bagby Parish Hall, with a special tribute from her grandchildren as well as Blue Bell ice cream (her favorite) for all. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made to St. Martin’s Endowment Fund or the Alzheimer’s Association. Doris will be remembered as a loving and devoted wife, mother, grandmother and great-grandmother. The most important things in her life were her family and faith. Schmidt Funeral Home
